Miami Lakes Middle School EESAC Meeting Minutes - Thursday, March 13, 2008
The meeting was called to order at 4:00 PM by Darlene Epstein, Chairperson. Present were members Beth Martinez, Mary Collins, Joaquin Hernandez, Jim Biddlecom, Alberto Tio, Dennis Wilson, Samuel Hassel, Kyle Pham and Kathy Pham.
The minutes from the February 19 meeting were reviewed and approved with minor changes.
Ms. Laquinda Johnson, a Language Arts teacher at MLMS, presented a request for EESAC funding to the council. Ms. Johnson presented the "Hollyread Hall Of Fame", a program she has personally designed to motivate students to commit to react more enthusiastically. Piggybacking on the AR program she adds a motivational twist, an opportunity for students to be showcased by placing their name on a wall in the school, recognizing the student for reaching his/her reading goal. Ms. Johnson has requested a total of $4675 to fund this program - primarily for student incentives, reading materials and club expenses.
Additional requests for funding were circulated, submissions from Dr. Weisberg, Ms. Diaz, Ms. Epstein, Ms. Marly Hernandez-Bouza and the Fine Arts Department were received. All funding requests are attached to these minutes for the record.
EESAC Chair, Ms. Darlene Epstein reported the availability of EESAC funds and requests for funding proposals had been advertised through email, reminders, morning announcements and directly to the faculty as a group. The above requests were submitted to Ms. Epstein in advance of the meeting. A motion was made and seconded to accept no further proposals.
Mr. Wilson addressed the group about the need for two wheelchairs for student transport. The group discussed the possibility of resourcing the chairs through one of a few Miami Lakes Medical firms, no firm commitment was reached as no dollar amount was included in the discussion.
The sum of all the proposals submitted (except the wheelchairs) would total close to $25,000, an amount the council could fully support if desired. It was suggested that everyone on the council read over the proposals prior to the next meeting where we would proceed with a vote.
The next meeting was set for Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at 3:30 PM.
Minutes recorded and submitted by council member Beth G. Martinez.
